Diabetic neuropathy – what is it and how to treat it with Capenergy

Neuropatía diabética, qué es y cómo tratarla con Capenergy

Spain is the second country with the highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe, with 6 millions of diabetics at the end of 2022. Diabetic neuropathy is a severe diabetic complication that affects up to 50% of all diabetic patients.

According to epidemiological studies, diabetes, also known as “diabetes mellitus’ is one of the metabolic disorders with the highest incidence in the population in Spain. Patients suffer the effects of hyperglycemia due to a lack of insulin secretion and all the conditions that derive from it.

Until 2006, there was a major prevalence among women, but this has now changed and it now mostly affects men, according to data collected by Diabetes in Spain and in the world, especially within the age ranges from 55 to 64 years and 65 to 74 years. Its mortality rate (2020) is of 20,46 persons per 100.000 inhabitants (equivalent to 2%).

In the case of type 1 diabetes, according to a study of IDF (International Diabetes Federation), at the end of 2022, in Spain almost 3 million patients had been registered, with a prevalence of 8,7% of persons with ages ranging from 20 to 79 years.

Diabetic patients have a deficient pancreas. The pancreas produces a hormone called insulin which acts like a key that opens the cells, allowing the blood sugar to enter the cells so they can use it as energy. When a person suffers from diabetes, the body does not produce sufficient insulin or the insulin cannot be used adequately. The patient therefore needs medicine to regulate insulin production, a supervised diet and exercise.

What is diabetic neuropathy?

Diabetic neuropathy can affect up to 50% of all diabetic patients. It is a type of nerve damage that can be produced when suffering from diabetes, as the high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves of the entire body, causing a range of disorders with specific characteristics according to the affected nerves. It most frequently affects the nerves of the legs and feet.

Nervous fiber is structurally modified because of the accumulation of substances derived from the glucose excess. This causes the loss of the normal nervous fiber coating: the myelin sheath. Furthermore, the vessels that irrigate the nerves can get obstructed by common mechanisms with other chronic complications derived from diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetic neuropathy

The symptoms depend on the type of diabetic neuropathy and the affected nerves. In its initial stages, this disorder can be asymptomatic with symptoms gradually appearing.

Depending on what nerves are affected, the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy include pain and numbness in the legs, feet and hands. It can also cause problems in the digestive system, the urinary tract, the blood vessels and the heart.

Some people affected by diabetic neuropathy have mild symptoms, but for others it can be very painful and disabling.

How to treat diabetic neuropathy with Capenergy?

It is possible to prevent or delay diabetic neuropathy with a constant control of the blood sugar levels and a healthy lifestyle.

Capenergy’s TecarEvolution Radiofrequency becomes a technological ally for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and its effects, as it helps mobilizing blood flow with electromagnetic drainage, exclusive to CAPENERGY’s technology.

Furthermore, the automatic treatments are safe thanks to the incorporation of a temperature sensor, which is very important considering diabetics can suffer paresthesias because of the loss of sensitivity and perception of the skin.

The lymphatic drainage performed by the device (active automatic plates on the soles of the feet and passive plates on the kidneys) during 20 or 30 minutes is perfect for the mobilization of the entire lymphatic system, and can be completed by a hepatic or pancreatic drainage, leaving the passive plates on the kidney and moving the active plates to the area of the liver and pancreas for another 20 minutes. This way, the entire organism will be mobilized, stimulating the blood flow in those areas.

A patient could be prescribed 5 to 10 sessions, so he can be treated weekly or biweekly, which will relieve him and help him. It is also possible to apply a manual treatment to the most painful areas, such as the knees, the ankles and the feet (as if you were treating plantar fasciitis).

If the problem is similar to restless leg syndrome, the treatment can be performed as well but shortening the drainage distance by placing the active plates on the foot soles and the passive plates on the gastrocnemius muscle. The treatments can be alternated, with an evaluation of the patient’s well being after each session, while also encouraging him to exercise in order to lower his blood sugar levels.

Ultimately, an holistic approach is recommended for this type of patients. Helping them maintain a correct diet, establish exercises and treatment with CAPENERGY.  From a physiotherapeutic standpoint,  we can support the usual medical treatment aimed at controlling blood sugar and insulin levels.

A physiotherapy treatment with one of our second generation radiofrequency devices can improve a diabetic patient’s life quality and especially mitigate their tiredness so they can exercise, as well as symptomatically solve tingling sensations, pain or weakness in the limbs.
